Dr Darshan Kulkarni
Darshan Shashank Kulkarni, 34 years old, has completed his schooling from the metropolitan city of Mumbai. He graduated (M.B.B.S) and completed his post graduation (general surgery) from ‘Oxford of the east’, the city of Pune.
He is a surgeon, working in a remote tribal area of India. He belongs to a family of doctors, and they run a 50 bedded hospital in Shahada, Maharastra. They cater to the health needs of poor tribal illiterate population.
Although his parents were born and brought up in the cities, they had a strong desire to work in a rural area and make the best medical facilities available and accessible to the extreme poor and downtrodden. They had to undergo extreme hardships to bring quality medical care to the Adivasi population. They practised everything from surgery to pediatrics, gynecology, and anesthesia. Even today 90% of our patients are adivasis who come from long distances to our hospital with great faith.
He had decided long ago that he would continue this tradition of giving the best possible care at very low cost. He always wanted to be a Rural Surgeon. Hence in spite of staying almost all his life in Mumbai & Pune, and having opportunities to go abroad or pursue higher studies and settle in the city of Pune, he came back to Shahada 3 years ago & joined his parents. He is dedicated to his work and his only ambition in life is to make the latest and most advanced medical facilities accessible to the neediest and poor tribal population of the area he lives in.
When at leisure, he enjoys reading fiction, while listening to contemporary, jazz and bollywood music. He enjoys a game of cricket and badminton whenever he can spare the time.
Dr. Darshan is married to Dr Malavika who also shares his dream of working in the rural areas. They have an adorable 2 years old son Arnav. He hopes that he will be able to instill the same values in their son that his parents have given and help make him a good human being! They have a 3-generation family.
He is looking forward to be a GSE team member and represent his part of the world and have an enriching experience.
